Water Base Formula
Water creates the liquid phase that allows pigments, humectants, and emulsifiers to combine into a spreadable cream. This helps the tint spread in a thin, even layer instead of feeling heavy.
Water-based ingredients in cosmetics are typically purified to meet specific quality specifications. On the ingredient label, the correct INCI term remains simply “Water.”
Alcohol Quick-set carrier
Alcohol is a lightweight, fast-evaporating carrier. It helps the color spread evenly and promotes faster drying, so the finish feels less wet or greasy on the scalp.
Fast evaporation is useful for a quick-drying tint, but alcohol can feel drying or sting on freshly shaved, damaged, or very sensitive skin. Apply only to an intact scalp, and do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin.
CI 77499, CI 77492 & CI 77491 Iron oxide pigments
These black, yellow, and red inorganic pigments are blended to create a natural-looking color. The goal is optical: to reduce the contrast between the visible scalp and the surrounding hair without using a permanent oxidative dye process.
Iron oxides have a long history of use in makeup and are approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, subject to applicable identity and purity specifications. They are colorants—not ingredients used to promote hair growth or treat hair loss.
Acrylates/Ethylhexyl Acrylate Copolymer Flexible film former
This film-forming polymer helps anchor the pigment to the scalp and enhances resistance to water and transfer. It creates a lightweight wear layer that keeps the color in place.
Cosmetic acrylate copolymers are considered safe for topical use when formulated to prevent irritation. Because this ingredient forms a film, be sure to rinse the product off thoroughly as directed—especially if your scalp is prone to buildup or folliculitis.
Ceteareth-25 Emulsifier
Ceteareth-25 helps ingredients that do not naturally mix stay evenly blended. This ensures a consistent cream texture and a more uniform distribution of pigment with each application.
It is widely used as a cosmetic emulsifier and is generally well tolerated in finished formulations. As with most surfactant-like substances, very sensitive skin may occasionally react to it.
Butylene Glycol Humectant + solvent
This multifunctional glycol helps dissolve and distribute other ingredients while retaining some moisture. In practice, it promotes smooth application and prevents uneven pigment distribution.
Butylene glycol is commonly found in leave-on cosmetics and has a favorable tolerance profile for most users. Individual sensitivities are still possible.
Propylene Glycol Humectant + solvent
Propylene glycol helps retain moisture, dissolve formula components, and improve spreadability. This makes it easier to apply the tint in a controlled, even layer.
It is well established in topical products, but a small number of people may experience irritation or contact dermatitis. Perform a patch test before full application if you know your scalp is sensitive.
Acrylates/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer Film-forming agent
A second film-forming polymer enhances pigment adhesion and helps the color layer remain uniform as it dries and wears.
Its role is superficial: it forms a cosmetic film without altering the hair follicle. Thorough cleansing according to the product's directions helps prevent the buildup of unwanted residue.
Hydroxyacetophenone Antioxidant carrier
Hydroxyacetophenone helps maintain formula stability by acting as an antioxidant and helps the preservative system work effectively throughout the product’s intended shelf life.
It is used at low concentrations in many modern cosmetic formulations. Its purpose here is to protect the product and ensure its stability—not to have a direct effect on hair growth.
PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil Solubilizer
This castor oil-derived solubilizer helps disperse oil-compatible materials throughout the aqueous phase. This promotes a stable texture and a more even application.
Hydrogenation and ethoxylation make this a functional cosmetic emulsifier; this should not be interpreted as evidence that the formula treats hair loss or stimulates growth.
1,2-Hexanediol Solvent + preservative booster
1,2-Hexanediol helps dissolve ingredients, provides light moisture, and supports the overall preservation system.
It is a common multifunctional ingredient in modern cosmetic formulas and is generally used at low, supportive levels.
Phenoxyethanol Preservative
A water-based cream needs protection against microbial growth. Phenoxyethanol is a widely used preservative that helps keep the product safe and stable during normal storage and use.
It has a long history of cosmetic use within established concentration limits. Rare reactions can occur in very sensitive users, which is another reason to perform a patch test on a new leave-on product.
Lauroamphozone Formula support
This amphoteric surfactant promotes dispersion and helps water-based and oil-compatible ingredients work together, resulting in a uniform cream.
Amphoteric surfactants are generally chosen for their ability to support mild formulations. As always, tolerance depends on the final formulation and the individual's scalp.
Caprylyl Glycol Conditioning agent
Caprylyl Glycol helps condition the skin's surface, retain moisture, and support the preservative system.
It is a common multifunctional cosmetic ingredient with a good tolerance profile in properly formulated products.
Sodium Laureth-12 Sulfate Surfactant
This ethoxylated surfactant helps wet and disperse formula components, promoting a consistent texture and even pigment application.
Sodium Laureth-12 Sulfate is not the same ingredient as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). It appears toward the end of this list, but the exact percentage cannot be determined based on the order of the ingredients on the label alone.
C11-15 Pareth-7 Emulsifier
This nonionic surfactant helps stabilize and evenly distribute the various components of the formula, contributing to a predictable texture and application.
It is used as a formulation aid rather than an active ingredient in hair or scalp treatments. Individual sensitivities may still occur.
Potassium Sorbate Preservative
Potassium sorbate helps control yeast and mold, complementing the formula’s primary preservation system and protecting product quality after opening.
It is widely used in both cosmetic and food applications. In a finished cosmetic product, performance and skin tolerance depend on its concentration, pH, and the rest of the preservative system.
